CCSD93 began its Dual Language program during the 2015-16 school year. All incoming CCSD93 kindergarten students, as well as students in higher grade levels in some circumstances, have the option to enroll in the Dual Language program each school year. The program includes both English and Spanish-speaking students. Students in this program receive instruction in English and in Spanish, and the purpose is to develop students who are bilingual, biliterate, and acquire multicultural competencies.

Research has shown that:

  • Dual language students may perform at or above grade level when compared with non-dual language students (Thomas and Collier, 2009).
  • Bilingual speakers tend to multi-task and maintain better cognitive function with age (Bialystok, 2011).
  • Early foreign language study gives children insight into other cultures and builds their cultural competency (Curtain & Dahlberg, 2014).
  • Dual language programs have shown to be effective in closing the achievement gap between English Language Learners and English native speakers (Thomas and Collier, 2004).
