Info for Cloverdale Parents of Students in Room 113 - 12/11/18

December 11, 2018

Dear Parents of Cloverdale Room 113 Students,

The following is being sent to inform you of a situation that occurred at Cloverdale yesterday involving students in your child’s class, and it is not intended to alarm you.

We were informed that a group of students held conversations in which they told ghost stories and shared details from scary movies with one another. Throughout the conversations, the students attempted to scare one another. At this time, a threatening comment was made by one of the students towards the others.

Upon being made aware of the comment, our administrators performed a thorough investigation, which included speaking with each student involved and completing a risk assessment. From the investigation, we are confident that the student who made the comment did not intend to cause physical harm to anyone.

Cloverdale School Psychologist Mrs. Johnson spoke with the class with Miss Henek. The class held a conversation about what happened. They discussed how the comments scared some classmates because they were unsure whether or not they were made in jest. Students asked questions, came to a full understanding of what happened, and felt safe upon the conclusion of the conversation with Mrs. Johnson and Miss Henek.

Please know Cloverdale School will not tolerate threats of any kind being made. Students who make threats will be provided with appropriate consequences. We have used this as a learning opportunity for our students, and I encourage you to reinforce the following with your child:

  • Threatening comments should never be made, even as a joke.
  • Any threat made will be taken seriously and investigated thoroughly.
  • A student should inform an adult immediately, either in person or through our SafeSchools Alert tip reporting system, if he or she feels threatened or unsafe in any way. More information on SafeSchools Alert can be found on our website.
  • A student should not hesitate to call 9-1-1 if he or she perceives immediate danger.

Our first priority is student safety and wellbeing. We appreciate your support as we work together for our students. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at 630-588-5300 or mccarrk@ccsd93.com.

Sincerely,

Korrie McCarry
Principal
Cloverdale Elementary School
