Celebrating the Life of Former CCSD93 Superintendent, Dr. Elsie Johnson
The CCSD93 family lost a pioneer on November 2, 2019, as Dr. Elsie Violet Carson Johnson passed away at the age of 97.
Dr. Johnson became CCSD93's first full-time Superintendent of Schools in 1959, a role in which she served until June 30, 1982. Prior to that, she taught multiple grades at the old Cloverdale School, located at the site of CCSD93's current Early Childhood Center, and served as the school's principal. Our Elsie C. Johnson Elementary School, which opened in the fall of 1982, is named for her.
Dr. Johnson was a committed educator with a strong sense of the learning needs of students.
The following quote, taken from a newspaper profile of her circa 1968, rings as true today as it was more than 50 years ago when she spoke it: "What children need today more than teaching aids, such as audio-visual equipment, is a close relationship with the teacher. Children must be made to feel 'at home' in the classroom. Only then can they learn."
CCSD93 continues to strive to make students feel at home while in the classroom and remains forever impacted by Dr. Johnson’s legacy within our community. Our hearts go out to her family and loved ones.
