Dear CCSD93 Early Childhood Center Families,

This message is intended to keep you updated on health and safety information. Tick activity has been observed near the ECC. While the activity has not been abundant, in past years ticks have originated from the marshy area beyond the school’s property line. As previously shared, our pest control service provider applied one preventative tick treatment earlier in the spring.

Our pest control service provider will be treating the areas outside of the school for the second time this spring on Friday, May 9 after school. The timing and method of treatment will ensure that the inside and outside of the school are safe for our students after application. Unless otherwise notified, starting Monday, May 12, we will once again bring students outside. 

Please note that while this treatment will help reduce tick activity, it is not 100% effective in eliminating it. As a precaution, we ask that all families continue to thoroughly check their child’s entire body for ticks after each schoolday until further notice.

Please refer to this linked document for information on checking for, removing and preventing ticks. An attached tick would have the appearance of a small black or brown bump between the size of a poppy seed and an apple seed. View the accompanying tick identification chart for further reference.

Tick borne illnesses, including Lyme disease, can have long-lasting negative health effects, but the most significant tick borne illnesses don’t typically transmit to individuals unless a tick has been attached for 36-48 hours. 

If you find that your child has hosted a tick, please review this information from the Illinois Department of Public Health. You may consider consulting your child’s physician. As indicated in the linked information, if after hosting a tick, your child experiences a rash that looks like a bull's-eye, or a rash anywhere on the body or an unexplained illness accompanied by fever following a tick bite, you should consult your child’s physician and explain that they were bitten by a tick.

Estimadas familias del Centro de Primera Infancia CCSD93:

Este mensaje tiene como objetivo mantenerlos informados sobre salud y seguridad. Se ha observado actividad de garrapatas cerca del ECC. Si bien no ha sido abundante, en años anteriores se han originado en la zona pantanosa más allá del límite de la propiedad de la escuela. Como ya se informó, nuestro proveedor de servicios de control de plagas aplicó un tratamiento preventivo contra garrapatas a principios de la primavera.

Nuestro proveedor de servicios de control de plagas tratará las áreas exteriores de la escuela por segunda vez esta primavera el viernes 9 de mayo después de clases. El horario y el método de tratamiento garantizarán que el interior y el exterior de la escuela sean seguros para nuestros estudiantes después de la aplicación. Salvo notificación contraria, a partir del lunes 12 de mayo, los estudiantes podrán salir nuevamente al exterior.

Tenga en cuenta que, si bien este tratamiento ayudará a reducir la actividad de garrapatas, no es 100 % eficaz para eliminarlas. Como medida de precaución, solicitamos a todas las familias que sigan revisando minuciosamente el cuerpo de sus hijos para detectar garrapatas después de cada jornada escolar hasta nuevo aviso.

Consulte este documento vinculado para obtener información sobre cómo detectar, eliminar y prevenir las garrapatas. Una garrapata adherida presenta la apariencia de una pequeña protuberancia negra o marrón, del tamaño de una semilla de amapola o de una semilla de manzana. Consulte la tabla de identificación de garrapatas adjunta para mayor información.

Las enfermedades transmitidas por garrapatas, incluida la enfermedad de Lyme, pueden tener efectos negativos duraderos para la salud, pero las enfermedades más importantes transmitidas por garrapatas generalmente no se transmiten a las personas a menos que una garrapata haya estado adherida durante 36 a 48 horas.

Si descubre que su hijo ha albergado una garrapata, revise esta información del Departamento de Salud Pública de Illinois. Puede consultar con el médico de su hijo. Como se indica en el enlace, si después de albergar una garrapata, su hijo presenta una erupción cutánea con forma de diana, una erupción en cualquier parte del cuerpo o una enfermedad inexplicable acompañada de fiebre tras la picadura de garrapata, debe consultar con el médico de su hijo y explicarle que le picó una garrapata.
