A Note for Elsie Johnson Parents - 4/15/19

April 15, 2019

Dear Elsie Johnson School Parents:

The following information is being sent to inform you of a situation that occurred at Elsie Johnson School today and is not intended to alarm you.

Towards the end of 4th and 5th grade recess, at approximately 12:50 p.m., a dog from a nearby home became loose and approached students. Students began to chase the dog, and then the dog began to chase students. As soon as the dog was observed by a lunch supervisor, the whistle was blown to bring students inside early, additional lunch supervisors apprehended the dog, and classroom teachers came out to assist in guiding students inside.

While some students reported having been frightened and that the dog nipped at them, no students were bitten or injured by the dog.

As students filed inside, the lunch supervisors called 9-1-1 to have animal control brought in, and they called to the school office. As soon as I received the call, I went to the playground, where lunch supervisors had the dog calmly waiting for animal control. Animal control arrived at 1:10 p.m., took possession of the dog, and identified that it belonged to the owner of a nearby home.

I thank our lunch supervisors for taking control of the situation so immediately and our students for cooperating as they were brought inside unexpectedly early. I know an incident like this can bring forth questions from students, so I want to make you aware of the situation if your child discusses it with you.

Please contact me at or 630-671-8800 if you have any questions or concerns regarding this matter.
