A Message for Elsie Johnson School Parents 10/25/19

October 25, 2019

Dear Elsie Johnson Elementary School Parents,

The purpose of this letter is to keep you informed regarding a situation that occurred at Elsie Johnson Elementary School today.

This morning, a student showed classmates a toy laser gun that the student had brought to school in their backpack. A staff member observed this and notified our administration immediately. We followed up directly with the student, and as always, school administration is working closely with the parent(s) and student to ensure appropriate consequences and supports are put in place. While at no point was it presented as anything other than a toy, nor were threats made, we share this information with you so that you understand the nature of the situation should your child discuss it with you.

It is of utmost importance that students and parents know that Elsie Johnson School will not tolerate the presence of a weapon or any item that resembles a weapon being brought to school. Student safety is our highest priority, and we will always take any incident involving the presence of a potential weapon very seriously.

Please use this situation as a learning opportunity for your children by reinforcing the following safety tips with them:
- Weapons and items resembling weapons should not be brought to school. Their presence on school grounds will always be taken seriously and not tolerated.
- Students should report the presence of any weapons, suspicious activities, threats, or disturbing information to a trusted adult immediately.
If students ever feel there is an immediate threat or that they are unsafe, they can always call 9-1-1.
- Students can use Safe School Helpline to anonymously share any concern with our administrators, if they prefer. There is more information on Safe School Helpline on our school website at www.ccsd93.com/elsiejohnson. While anonymity is always an option when using the Helpline, we encourage students to share as much information as possible so that we may thoroughly and appropriately investigate the situation.

Thank you for partnering with us to provide the safest learning environment possible for our students. I appreciate you sharing this crucial information with your child. Please contact me at sikichr@ccsd93.com or 630-671-8800 if you have any questions or concerns.

Thank you for your continued support,

Rosanne Sikich
