Starting in January, Stratford and Jay Stream will each tout a new basketball team as CCSD93 offers its first ever Unified Sports opportunities to students! Unified Sports brings together students with disabilities and students without, as they collaborate to build relationships through a common competitive activity. The concept has been employed at schools of all kinds throughout the nation from elementary through the collegiate level across a variety of sports.
CCSD93’s teams will be aligned with the Special Olympics of Illinois Unified Sports program and comprised of six students with disabilities and nine students without from across all three middle school grade levels. The coed teams will practice weekly in January and February before competing against other area middle schools in a culminating tournament on February 22 that will feature official referees and scorekeeping.
CCSD93 students who participate in Unified Sports will grow in their athletic skills and abilities, camaraderie, and engagement in leadership opportunities to support peers.
The basketball season is just the beginning, as CCSD93 hopes to expand offerings to additional sport seasons, with eyes on track, soccer, and more.
