Dear Parents of CCSD93 4th Grade Students,

This message is to notify you about a basic growth and development program that all CCSD93 4th graders will be participating in during three of their health/physical education class periods in April. This unit is part of the district health instruction program and is designed to provide pre-adolescent puberty education. Please note, this program has been in place with CCSD93 for several years and is not being implemented in relation to the controversial newer sex education state standards, which CCSD93’s Board of Education opted out of adopting.

The program is scheduled to begin on the following dates at CCSD93’s elementary schools:

• Carol Stream: April 9
• Cloverdale: April 7
• Elsie Johnson: April 9
• Heritage Lakes: April 22
• Roy DeShane: April 22
• Western Trails: April 8

Before the program begins at your child’s school, you as a parent/guardian are invited to find out more about this unit by following the instructions below to view an informational video. The video and program, known as the Puberty I Combined program, are provided by Candor Health Education, formerly known as the Robert Crown Center for Health Education.

The program focuses on the emotional and physical changes that occur during puberty. The class format will feature students independently watching a prerecorded video of the program, and they will be encouraged to ask their health/physical education teacher questions that arise as they learn. Please note, because the format features independent learning, all students in the class will participate in the program in the same learning space.

The following are the goals of this program:

• Students will increase their knowledge of human anatomy, the changes which occur during puberty, and the reasons for these changes.
• Students will learn skills to take care of their bodies as they experience the changes of puberty. Health and hygiene are stressed.
• Students will understand that the changes of puberty are a normal part of human development. This knowledge will help to increase their comfort when discussing this topic with a trusted adult.

If after watching the video you do not wish for your child to participate in the program, please complete the form linked here by the day before the program begins at your child’s school as listed above. If you do so, your child will be withheld from the program and assigned separate learning activities during this time.

Estimados padres de estudiantes de cuarto grado del CCSD93:

Este mensaje es para informarles sobre un programa básico de crecimiento y desarrollo en el que participarán todos los alumnos de 4.º grado del CCSD93 durante tres de sus clases de salud y educación física en abril. Esta unidad forma parte del programa de instrucción de salud del distrito y está diseñada para brindar educación sobre la pubertad preadolescente. Tengan en cuenta que este programa ha estado vigente en el CCSD93 durante varios años y no se está implementando en relación con los controvertidos nuevos estándares estatales de educación sexual, cuya adopción por parte de la Junta de Educación del CCSD93 decidió no adoptar.

Antes de que comience el programa en la escuela de su hijo/a, le invitamos, como padre/tutor, a obtener más información sobre esta unidad siguiendo las instrucciones a continuación para ver un video informativo. Si después de ver el video no desea que su hijo/a participe en el programa, complete el formulario incluido aquí antes del día anterior al inicio del programa en la escuela de su hijo/a, como se indica arriba. De lo contrario, su hijo/a no podrá participar en el programa y se le asignarán actividades de aprendizaje separadas durante este tiempo.
