A Note to the Jay Stream Middle School Community - 9/17/19

September 17, 2019

Dear Jay Stream Middle School Parents,

The purpose of this letter is to keep you informed of a situation that occurred today at Jay Stream Middle School, and it is not intended to alarm you.

Today, Jay Stream’s administration was informed that there was reason to believe students had been using a vaping device on school grounds. As soon as we were made aware, we investigated the situation. We determined that a limited number of students had utilized a vaping device. I have reached out to the families of all involved students, and the students will receive appropriate consequences.

Jay Stream Middle School will not tolerate vaping devices on school property. All instances in which any such item is found on school property will be taken seriously, and the students involved will receive appropriate consequences and supports.

Please take this as an opportunity to share with your child that the use of vaping devices is harmful to one’s health. It is also important for you to you know that many can look like USB devices, pens, and other ordinary small items. While specific laws on vaping devices are vague and vary dependent upon their contents and the municipality in which they are possessed, it is illegal for minors in Carol Stream to possess them.

I invite all of our parents to learn more about vaping devices, including their negative health effects, legal ins and outs, and how to spot them, at CCSD93’s Dangers of Vaping parent presentation, scheduled for October 2 at 7 p.m. at Fountain View Recreation Center in Carol Stream. You will be able to hear from police, health, and school experts and ask questions of them. If you cannot make it in person, you can view it live on CCSD93’s Facebook page at

We are also working on bringing additional teaching and learning resources our school to help students understand the negative health effects of using vaping devices, how to resist peer and marketing pressure, and more. Please look for more information on these resources in the near future.

As always, student health and safety are our highest priorities. I appreciate you reiterating this crucial information with your child. Please contact me at or 630-588-5200 if you have any questions or concerns.
