An Important Message for Stratford Middle School Parents 11/22/19

November 22, 2019

Dear Stratford Middle School Parents,

The purpose of this letter is to keep you informed regarding a situation that occurred at Stratford Middle School today.

This morning, a staff member observed a classmate to be in the possession of a multi-purpose pocket knife. The staff member shared it with our administration. We immediately investigated the situation, and the pocket knife was confiscated from the student. From our investigation, we are confident that at no point were any threats made, and no students or staff members were ever in immediate danger. As always, school administration is working closely with the parent(s) and student to ensure appropriate consequences and supports are put in place.

Stratford Middle School will not tolerate a knife or any weapon being brought to school. We will always take any incident involving the presence of a weapon very seriously and have the full cooperation of our local police departments.

Please use this situation as a learning opportunity for your children by reinforcing the following safety tips with them:

  • Knives and weapons of any type are dangerous and are not jokes.  The presence of such a weapon on school grounds will always be taken seriously and not tolerated.
  • Students should report the presence of any weapons, suspicious activities, threats, or disturbing information to a trusted adult immediately.
  • If students ever feel there is an immediate threat or that they are unsafe, they can always call 9-1-1.
  • Students can use Safe School Helpline to anonymously share any concern with our administrators, if they prefer. There is more information on Safe School Helpline on our school website at www.ccsd93.com/stratford. While anonymity is always an option when using the Helpline, we encourage students to share as much information as possible so that we may thoroughly and appropriately investigate the situation.

As always, student health and safety are our highest priorities. Thank you for partnering with us to provide the safest learning environment possible for our students. I appreciate you reiterating this crucial information with your child. Please contact me at dawsonp@ccsd93.com or 630-671-4300 if you have any questions or concerns.

Sincerely,
Patrick Dawson
Principal
