Dear Stratford Middle School Community,

The purpose of this letter is to keep you informed regarding a situation involving Stratford Middle School students.

Late Friday, a parent reported to school administration that their child had overheard other students on their bus route speak of using a weapon. Upon receiving this information, we began working with the Bloomingdale Police Department to investigate. Through the investigation, it became clear that the students in question were referring to water gel pellet guns that they planned to play with after school. The items were not brought to school or on the school bus and there was never any threat to student safety.

Still, out of an abundance of caution, the Bloomingdale Police increased their presence in and around Stratford Middle School today as we awaited video confirmation of the investigation’s findings from our bus service provider. The video evidence confirmed the investigation’s findings. If you have not received a separate communication on this matter, it did not occur on your child’s bus route.

In today’s climate, we know that even talk of weapons intended as play can be alarming when taken out of context and neither our school nor buses are appropriate spaces for such conversations. We have worked with the students involved and their families to reiterate this point. I am thankful to the parent and student for speaking up when they believed a potentially unsafe situation might be at hand and to the Bloomingdale Police Department for their swift and thorough response. 

We share this information with you to ensure you receive accurate information as we understand this may be a point of discussion among our students. Stratford Middle School will always take any incident involving student safety, including potential threats or matters involving weapons very seriously and have the full cooperation of our local police departments. As a parent, your perspective matters to your child. Please use this situation as a learning opportunity for your children by reinforcing the following safety tips with them:

• Weapons of any type are dangerous and are not jokes.
• Students should report safety concerns, including the presence of any weapons, suspicious activities, threats, or disturbing information to a trusted adult immediately.
• If students ever feel there is an immediate threat or that they are unsafe, they can always call 9-1-1.
• Students can use Safe School Helpline to anonymously share any concern with our administrators, if they prefer. There is more information on Safe School Helpline on our school website at www.ccsd93.com/stratford. While anonymity is always an option when using the Helpline, we encourage students to share as much information as possible so that we may thoroughly and appropriately investigate the situation.

El propósito de esta carta es mantenerlo informado sobre una situación que involucra a estudiantes de Stratford Middle School.

El viernes por la noche, un padre informó a la administración de la escuela que su hijo había escuchado a otros estudiantes en la ruta del autobús hablar sobre el uso de un arma. Al recibir esta información, comenzamos a trabajar con el Departamento de Policía de Bloomingdale para investigar. A través de la investigación, quedó claro que los estudiantes en cuestión se referían a pistolas de perdigones de gel de agua con las que planeaban jugar después de la escuela. Los artículos no fueron llevados a la escuela ni en el autobús escolar y nunca hubo ninguna amenaza a la seguridad de los estudiantes.

Aún así, por precaución, la policía de Bloomingdale aumentó su presencia hoy en la escuela secundaria Stratford y sus alrededores mientras esperábamos la confirmación en video de los hallazgos de la investigación por parte de nuestro proveedor de servicios de autobús. Las pruebas en vídeo confirmaron los resultados de la investigación. Si no ha recibido una comunicación por separado sobre este asunto, esto no ocurrió en la ruta del autobús de su hijo.

En el clima actual, sabemos que incluso hablar de armas con fines de juego puede resultar alarmante si se saca de contexto y ni nuestra escuela ni nuestros autobuses son espacios apropiados para ese tipo de conversaciones. Hemos trabajado con los estudiantes involucrados y sus familias para reiterar este punto. Agradezco a los padres y al estudiante por hablar cuando creían que una situación potencialmente peligrosa podría estar presente y al Departamento de Policía de Bloomingdale por su respuesta rápida y exhaustiva.

Compartimos esta información con usted para garantizar que reciba información precisa, ya que entendemos que esto puede ser un punto de discusión entre nuestros estudiantes. Stratford Middle School siempre tomará muy en serio cualquier incidente que involucre la seguridad de los estudiantes, incluidas amenazas potenciales o asuntos relacionados con armas, y contará con la total cooperación de nuestros departamentos de policía locales.
