Dear CCSD93 Families,

On Wednesday, October 4 at 1:20 pm, a national emergency alert test will go out on every TV, radio, and cell phone in the United States. The test is a coordination of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). While CCSD93 has no control over this alert, and it should not play on our MacBook or iPad devices, we want parents and students to be aware since it will occur during a school day. 

A press release issued about the alert indicates that cell towers will broadcast the test for approximately 30 minutes. During this time, Wireless Emergency Alert (WEA)-compatible wireless phones that are switched on, within range of an active cell tower, and whose wireless provider participates in WEA, should be capable of receiving the test message.  For consumers, the message that appears on their phones will read: “THIS IS A TEST of the National Wireless Emergency Alert System. No action is needed.”  Phones with the main menu set to Spanish will display: “ESTA ES UNA PRUEBA del Sistema Nacional de Alerta de Emergencia. No se necesita acción.”

Our hope is that this test is as least disruptive to the school day as possible. Teachers will inform their students of the alert prior to 1:20 and pause instruction as the alerts come through. If you believe it may alarm your child, please have a conversation to prepare them further.

El miércoles 4 de octubre a la 1:20 p. m., se emitirá una prueba de alerta de emergencia nacional en todos los televisores, radios y teléfonos celulares de los Estados Unidos. La prueba es una coordinación de la Agencia Federal para el Manejo de Emergencias (FEMA) y la Comisión Federal de Comunicaciones (FCC). Si bien CCSD93 no tiene control sobre esta alerta y no debería reproducirse en nuestros dispositivos MacBook o iPad, queremos que los padres y estudiantes estén conscientes ya que ocurrirá durante un día escolar.

Un comunicado de prensa emitido sobre la alerta indica que las torres de telefonía celular transmitirán la prueba durante aproximadamente 30 minutos. Durante este tiempo, los teléfonos inalámbricos compatibles con Alerta de Emergencia Inalámbrica (WEA) que estén encendidos, dentro del alcance de una torre celular activa y cuyo proveedor de servicios inalámbricos participe en WEA, deberían poder recibir el mensaje de prueba. Para los consumidores, el mensaje que aparece en sus teléfonos dirá: “ESTA ES UNA PRUEBA del Sistema Nacional Inalámbrico de Alerta de Emergencia. No es necesaria ninguna acción”. Los teléfonos con el menú principal configurado en español mostrarán: “ESTA ES UNA PRUEBA del Sistema Nacional de Alerta de Emergencia. No se necesita acción”.

Nuestra esperanza es que esta prueba sea lo menos perturbadora posible para el día escolar. Los maestros informarán a sus estudiantes sobre la alerta antes de la 1:20 y pausarán la instrucción a medida que lleguen las alertas. Si cree que esto puede alarmar a su hijo, tenga una conversación para prepararlo más.
