Entrance Procedures at CCSD93 Schools
As you visit a CCSD93 school, you will notice signage that provides you with instructions for entering the school. These instructions were put in place to ensure that our students staff enjoy the greatest possible safety as they learn and teach. Visitors will be asked to state their name and the purpose of their visit.
Visitors who are not recognized or do not have appointments may not be allowed to enter the building, or in some cases may need to wait a considerable time before being allowed entry. Those who have been part of the community for years will also be required to go through the entrance procedures.
In addition, CCSD93 has installed technical features that will link each school to first responders in case of an emergency situation.
It is essential that CCSD93 has a systemic approach to safety and security. These procedures will only continue to assist staff with the safest possible teaching and learning environments.

Student Discipline
The philosophy in CCSD93 is that for schools to be effective, they must give all students the opportunity to learn and all teachers the opportunity to teach. Our response to children’s behavior is consistent with education’s goals of supporting teaching and learning—not punishment, retribution, and exclusion. We strive to assure that our schools are a social community where every child belongs and where children’s behavioral challenges are addressed through supportive, educational interventions. CCSD93 implements restorative disciplinary practices that create positive relationships and peaceful resolution of conflict for staff and students. The premise of restorative disciplinary practices is to educate students and repair relationships. CCSD93’s discipline process has three broad goals: to keep students safe, to teach students to become socially competent, to teach students to take responsibility for their actions.
In CCSD93, the Building Principal is responsible for overseeing the district’s discipline process in their building. It is expected that high standards of conduct will be maintained at all times. These standards are consistent with the research on emotional and social growth of children. Generally, behavioral interventions are handled by the person who identifies/observes the incident (when appropriate).
The educational environment of the District shall be such that the administration and teachers shall demonstrate equitable, fair, just, flexible attitudes and disciplinary efforts toward all students.
In all matters relating to the discipline and conduct of the students in loco parentis, the teachers and other certified educational employees stand in the relation of parents/guardians to the students. This relationship shall extend to all activities connected with the school program and may be exercised at any time for the safety and supervision of the students in the absence of their parents/guardians.

Heritage Lakes Hatchings: Learning About Chicks in 1st Grade
In 1st grade, a key learning standard that students explore is lifecycles, and a terrific example is that of a chicken. During the springtime, many CCSD93 1st graders examine these birds’ development firsthand by hosting and observing eggs from incubation to hatched chicks in their classrooms. Find out more about what Heritage Lakes students learned from the experience!

Carol Stream 5th Graders Leave Legacy Behind Through Published Works!
Before moving on from Carol Stream Elementary, the school’s 5th graders created works to leave their mark on the school. Collaborating in small groups, they storyboarded, wrote, animated and published fictional narratives where characters employ the “3 P’s”--perseverance, productive struggle and problem solving--to find success. Each group’s Legacy Book was bound into a physical copy and gifted to a younger grade’s class, where it will live on in the classroom library to teach others how to overcome obstacles for years to come! Watch this video to find out more!

4th grade students in CCSD93’s Dual Language program recently wrote imaginative stories, recorded themselves reading them aloud and posted them to FlipGrid, an educational video sharing app. They then worked together across the District by watching the videos of their peers at Cloverdale, Elsie Johnson and Heritage Lakes. It was a terrific opportunity for the students to practice their oracy and collaborate with classmates from different schools!
